The Nativity Scene: History and Significance of Christmas Tradition https://blackstarnews.com/the-nativity-scene-history/ Thu, 26 Dec 2024 12:20:24 +0000 https://blackstarnews.com/?p=85373 The post The Nativity Scene: History and Significance of Christmas Tradition appeared first on Black Star News.

]]>
Nativity scenes during Christmas are seen everywhere, churches, homes, and public places. The birth of Jesus Christ is the main theme of Christmas and can be seen in these displays. However, did you ever think about where this tradition comes from and became an important part of the Christmas celebration? We will learn about the history and the importance of the native scene and how it has evolved over the centuries.

The Origin of The Nativity Scene

Crèche, the tradition of the nativity scene, first emerged in the early 13th century and is believed to have been created by Saint Francis of Assisi. Saint Francis’s goal was to share the knowledge about Jesus’s birth and make people understand the importance of it. He accomplished it by setting up a lively nativity scene that included real animals and people portraying Mary, Joseph, and the Shepherds.  Saint Francis wanted to show people how simple and humble Christ’s birth was. People’s beliefs strengthened in him as the nativity scene was portrayed in a very real way. The first nativity scene was so powerful that people got motivated to replicate it and share the knowledge all across the world.

How did Nativity spread?

After Saint Francis created the lively nativity scene, it spread across Europe. There were many other versions created using statues or sculptures instead of real humans by the monasteries and churches. This nativity scene was usually created during the Christmas time to spread the significance of Christ’s birth and people could worship easily. Many people started to celebrate this at home by hiring artisans to create a unique set that would depict the Birth of Jesus. Wood, clay, and terracotta were mainly used to create the nativity scene. From generation to generation, it was passed and people still celebrate it and praise the Lord Jesus.

What is the role of Art and Culture?

Many artists like Giottio, and Fra Angelico started painting the nativity scenes which was widely appreciated by the Christian communities. They brought their own culture and artistic sides to the paintings depicting the nativity which made it very special. The painting helped to popularize the significance of the nativity amongst people and it became a very important part of the Christmas season. In Poland, the nativity scenes reflect the local customs and it is called szopka nativity. The nativity is inspired by the local architecture which includes miniature buildings which are very colourful.  Local farmers, musicians, and animals were included in the nativity of Latin America as well as the elements of everyday life which made the nativity scene even more wonderful.

Evolving of the Nativity Scene

These days, it has evolved very much and can be seen celebrated differently in every part of the world. There are grand displays in the public as well as small home set-ups in people’s homes. There is a wide variety of costumes, makeup, and animals and sometimes they even use a real baby to portray the birth of Jesus Christ. Santa Claus is one of the most beloved characters in the world. He gives presents to the kids who behaved well throughout the year. Every December, kids wait for his arrival on his infamous sleigh flying through the sky. Santa Claus’s story is a mix of imagination, culture, and history which is very fascinating.

    The roots

Santa Claus was not always a jolly person in a red suit, his story goes way back. It is said he is Saint Nicholas, a Christian bishop who lived in Turkey during the 4th century. Saint Nicholas was considered to be a very helpful, kind, and generous person. He has a soft spot for children and the poor. Urban legends say that he performed many miracles and gave presents to whoever was in need. One famous story about Saint Nicholas is where he helped a poor family by dropping bags of gold in their home because the father had no money for his daughter’s wedding. This act of kindness gave more growth to the idea of giving gifts anonymously.

    Santa across the globe

A saint Nicholas legend kept spreading, it reached different parts of the world. He became known by various traditions and names in different countries. In the Netherlands, he was known as Sinterklaas, which sounds a lot like Santa Claus. He is depicted as a grown man with a long white beard, wearing a bishop’s robe and riding on a horse who delivered gifts for kids on the 5th or 6th of December. The Dutch settlers came to America in the 1600s and brought this Sinterklaas tradition with them and over time it evolved into Santa Claus with a mixed blend of European and American traditions.

    Modern-day Santa

The image of Santa Claus being a big happy man in a red suit and long beard started to take shape during the 19th century. “A Visit from Saint Nicholas” was a poem which was published in the early 1820s by Clement Clarke Moore described the jolly personality of Santa. He made people imagine him as a cheerful and kind man who traveled through the sleigh in the sky. This started the modern-day image of Santa Claus. During the 1860s, an artist named Thomas Nast created an illustration for Harper’s Weekly which showed Santa Claus living as a round and jolly figure on the north pole with a list of naughty and nice kids. This played a major role in shaping the idea of Santa Claus in the American tradition.

    Coca-Cola and Santa

In the 1930’s, the Coca-Cola company started using Santa Claus in its advertisements and commissioned Haddon Sundblom to create illustrations. His illustration of Santa Claus was very warm and friendly and had shiny twinkle eyes with rosy cheeks. These images widely gained attention and recognized Santa as the global symbol of Christmas.

    Where does santa live?

The story says that he lives on the North Pole and has magical elves who make toys for the kids, this concept grew out of the 19th century and was in literature books for children to read. The North Pole is an isolated place so far away from the people, making it the perfect home for Santa Claus to live peacefully. The magical elves prepare the toys for the kids tirelessly and Santa’s workshop is a bustling place. The idea of Christmas brings back the excitement and magic for the people.

    The Spirit of Santa

Initially, Santa represented generosity, kindness, and Joy but modern-day Santa Claus is more associated with giving gifts. Santa’s role is more than just gift-giving, he wants to spread happiness and think about others, especially during the holiday season. Children start to believe in magic and for adults, he serves as a reminder of the joy that comes from giving and cherishing eerie moments with their loved ones.

    Santa Claus around the world

He is celebrated differently in many countries but in some countries, he is also joined by another character in Germany, children celebrate Saint Nicholas who brings them gifts on the 5th or 6th of December. In Italy, children wait for the celebrations of La Befana, a witch who is very kind and gives gifts on Epiphany which is December 6. Then, in Russia, Ded Moroz distributes gifts during the New Year celebration along with his granddaughter, known as Snow Maiden.

    The Evolution of Santa Claus

Santa has evolved with time, influenced by books, movies, and theatres. Movies like Miracle on 34 Street and the Santa Claus have added a new way of portrayal for Santa showcasing the feeling of belief and hope. Today, Santa can be seen in public places, all dressed up and spreading happiness around the globe.

Christmas Eve is finally here after a long wait of a whole year and people have already started waiting for their dearest Santa to come and deliver his blessings as well as the special gifts he has in store for them. If you are also eagerly awaiting Santa’s arrival and want to know exactly when he will reach your hometown, NORAD Santa Tracker is already live for you which will provide a real-time live location of Santa Claus and the details about where he is now headed.

This article brings you all the details you need to know about the NORAD Santa Tracker Christmas Eve including the story behind the tradition of tracking Santa and how exactly it started.

NORAD Santa Tracker Christmas Eve: What Exactly Is It?

NORAD Santa Tracker is an annual Christmas program first launched by the North American Aerospace Defense Command in 1955. The annual program publishes live tracking of Santa’s location as he leaves the North Pole and then travels across the globe to deliver gifts and blessings to children who deserve them every year on Christmas Eve.

The program originally begins on the 1st of December but the actual stimulation of tracking Santa’s location goes live at midnight on the 24th of December every year.

    How The Tradition Started?

The tradition of tracking Santa’s location every year began in 1955 when a Sears advertisement accidentally misprinted a phone number that children were supposed to call to reach Santa.

Instead of reading the North Pole, the call of a young boy reached the Continental Air Defense Command where the Colonel of the Air Force named Harry Shoup picked up the call. As the colonel realized the mix-up, instead of clearing it out he kept speaking with the boy in the voice of Santa. He later jokingly told his staff to “track” Santa’s location on their radar marking the start of an age-old tradition.

How The Santa Tracker Tradition Became A Light In The Darker Times?

The tradition of tracking Santa’s live location began at a time when the world was plunged into the darkness of the Cold War between the United States of America and the Soviet Union. Air Force Colonel Harry Shoup used the tradition to boost the morale of his soldiers and the public. This story first came into the limelight in 1955 as NORAD used the tradition in order to assure the children that their dearest Santa would have a safe passage into the United States, even jokingly referencing Santa’s protection against any possible attacks by those who do not believe in Christmas.

    The Modern-Day Adaptations

NORAD’s live Santa tracking proved to be an age-long tradition as it maintained its hype despite many attempts at Santa’s commercialization failing. The main reason why the tradition stayed alive for so long is because NORAD actively combined technology and the magic of the Christmas holidays.

NORAD claims that it uses the satellite systems reserved for national defense, but it only simulates predetermined locations for people. Today, the tradition has become global, with millions of users following it online. NORAD publishes the location in nine different languages, and millions of children call it every year to ask about Santa’s whereabouts.

NORAD Santa Tracker Christmas Eve: How Is The Tradition Still Alive?

Despite Government shutdowns and other major challenges that led to many failed attempts of other organizations to commercialize Santa in a similar way, the NORAD Santa Tracker volunteers still continue to answer the calls of children asking for Santa’s whereabouts.

The tradition now has its own app as well that allows the families to track the live location of Santa in real-time. The Air Force colonel who now oversees the program Case Cunningham mentioned that the main focus is to keep the tradition alive for the sake of children’s joy.

How Does NORAD Santa Tracker Christmas Eve Work?

If you wish to know when Santa Claus will be reaching your location, you can simply visit the official website of the NORAD Santa Tracker. The official website explains how 47 different checkpoints of the North American Warning System keep a close eye on the indications of Santa leaving the North Pole and once he does, their satellites track his location as well as monitor any air attack aimed at North America.

You can also call the NORAD Tracks Santa Operations Center at 1-877-446-6723 from 6 AM to 2 AM ET on the 24th of December. More than 1,250 personnel from the US and Canada actively volunteer to answer the calls, according to reports. Some of the years, the president and first lady also join in.

    Conclusion

Colonel Harry Shoup passed away in the year 2009 but left behind a tradition that continues to light up Christmas for many children who believe in Santa and wait for his arrival eagerly. Shoup’s children once mentioned they received letters from many people across the globe thanking them for Colonel’s precious role in the tracker’s creation.

An old man with a long white beard wearing a red suit and riding a flying reindeer sleigh coming on Christmas Eve and blessing well-deserved children with the toys of their choice has been the story every child has been told. However, as they grow up, they start questioning the existence of Santa. Is Santa real? If you are also wondering how to answer this question without killing the joy and the spirit of Christmas, this article brings you an apt explanation of Santa’s existence and the way to explain his existence to your kids.

    Who Is Santa Claus?

Santa Claus is a legendary figure who is believed to bring gifts for those children who are well-behaved and deserve his blessings in the late hours of Christmas Eve. Is Santa Real: The Origination

Santa Claus is a legendary figure who is inspired by the 4th century Saint named Saint Nicholas who was known for his generosity and kindness. According to the legends, Saint Nicholas once helped a poor man in need of financial help by dropping a bag of gold coins through his chimney into his stockings that were kept for drying by the fireplace. After his demise, his death anniversary was marked by a feast and gift-giving every year. The Dutch version of his name was Sinter Klaas and that’s how the English version of his name Santa Claus came into existence.

    Santa’s Connection With Christmas

The feast on his death anniversary was celebrated every year on the 6th of December and was the closest to Christmas which fell every year on the 25th of December and marked the birth of Jesus Christ. Because these two celebrations had almost the same themes of spreading love and peace through gift-giving, people decided to merge the two. However, as time passed Santa Claus became more imaginary than a reality and the focus shifted towards portraying Santa as an old man with magic who knows the well-behaved children and lives on the North Pole.

Is Santa Real: How To Address The Question?

If your kid has also started questioning the existence of Santa Claus and is demanding an answer, the best way to address the question and also not kill the Christmas spirit is to not downright deny his existence. That would just break their heart and they might stop enjoying the joys of Christmas as a whole. Instead, explain the legend behind the origin of Santa Claus and tell them about the good qualities of Saint Nicholas. They will definitely see the similarities between the imaginary figure and the real Santa and that would make much more sense.

They can go shopping with you before Christmas and buy gifts for the family as well as their friends. This will definitely inspire them to be like their favorite Santa Claus and will also let them enjoy the excitement of gift-giving.

    Conclusion

Santa Claus has always been an integral part of the Christmas celebrations and the gift-giving tradition of the festival. Even though the existence of a magical old man with a rag full of gifts is a myth, the children can still enjoy the legend as a fantasy story. Now that they know about the real Santa Claus, they may also start giving gifts to other children younger than them and be the Santa for those in need.
